Petrol Hedge Trimmers

Read this before you buy a petrol hedge trimmer.

You don’t want to buy a hedge trimmer before you check out a few of the more reputable brands that are available. Why? Because quality can vary quite wildly when it comes to buying power tools.

What is so exceptional about those particular brands? They have a long reputation of developing high quality petrol hedge trimmers that fit many different needs and budgets. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a high quality hedge trimmer.

What types of options will you want to look for? I would first suggest that you consider what you need to do with your hedge trimmer, what type of work will you be doing? If you have some heavy duty cutting to do, you might want to look for a higher horsepower engine, larger fuel capacity, and a longer blade with heavy duty cutting capability. Conversely, you can easily find cheaper trimmers to quickly take care of easy hedge cutting jobs on a small budget.

What to look for in a petrol hedge trimmer

So, you have the ability to put a few models up for further examination before you decide to buy. What will you want to look for to compare a few different hedge trimmers to each other?

  • Double reciprocating blades – this is a very common blade style, it will be standard on most trimmers, and will allow you to easily chop through thicker shrubs.
  • A shaft or a pole – sometimes you need to reach up higher when cutting up your hedges. Or maybe you even need to reach low hanging tree branches? Look for a trimmer with an extension arm or pole if this is the case, they are pretty common.
  • Rotating handles – Getting a good cutting angle is all about positioning your hands correctly. Look for a hedge trimmer that has rotating handles if you have less-than-conventional hedge cutting, or lots of work to do.
  • Anti-vibration features – What is so special about anti-vibration features on a hedge trimmer? It will help reduce fatigue from the vibration of the engine. This is vital if you will be using a hedge trimmer on a frequent basis, or for long periods of time.
  • Trigger locks – Trigger locks are a nice safety feature. Think about it, a hedge trimmer has nasty, sharp and open blades. They could easily cut somebody if you are not careful. Trigger locks keep you from accidentally activating the blade.
  • Emission direction – You don’t like the smell of exhaust, eh? Look for a hedge trimmer that has exhaust directors that push it away from you. Also try to stay up wind from the exhaust if this is a major concern for you.
  • Easy starting mechanisms – Although most petrol hedge trimmers are easy to start, it can help to have an easy starting engine feature. This is more common than you might think on newer models.

Once you have taken a look at the different models that catch your interest, you will get a good feel for what is out there. These are some of the major things I would look for if buying a new hedge trimmer this summer. And I’m sure there’s plenty of other new features available that I haven’t even run across yet.
